Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a military coup in September and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your phone there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

They also requested that he be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was determined responsible of leading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brasília.

The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The justices found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
