Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
